Fault Diagnosis and Repair of Car Starters

Common failure phenomena
Completely fails to start: The drive gear doesn’t turn. Possible causes include a short circuit in the electromagnetic switch coil, poor contact on the contact disc, or a faulty power cable, among others.
Difficulty starting: The engine fails to turn the crankshaft, which could be caused by a weak battery, loose wire connections, worn-out brushes, excessive engine resistance, or other issues.
Drive gear idling: The gear is not engaged with the flywheel, which could be due to excessive meshing clearance, one-way clutch slippage, or other factors.
Maintenance Method
Cleaning and Maintenance: Regularly remove dust and oil buildup from the exterior of the starter, and check whether wiring connections are loose or corroded.
Component Inspection: Focus on checking the brushes (replace if excessively worn), the armature (repair if short- or open-circuited), the electromagnetic switch (grind or replace if contact points are eroded), and the bearings (replace if worn).
Fault Diagnosis:
Rule of thumb: Briefly touch the electromagnetic switch terminals with a wire. If the engine starts, the issue lies in the starter relay or the fuse; otherwise, the problem is with the starter motor itself.
Multimeter Testing Method: Measure the continuity at the electromagnetic switch terminals to determine whether replacement is necessary.
Specialized handling:
Gear wear: Replace the drive gear or flywheel ring gear.
One-way clutch slipping: Inspect and replace the clutch.
Electromagnetic switch failure: Repair or replace components such as the coil and contacts.
